Object, 2003, glazed porcelain, 14.5cm diameter.
A unique artwork that plays with the idea of the crackled glaze that develops on porcelain over time, picking out the possible lines and traces across the surface of the piece. In a lovely conceptual twist, these lines also refer loosely to the pattern of waterways in China and The Netherlands, along which early trade in porcelain occurred.
"During a residence at the European Ceramic Work Centre in Den Bosch in The Netherlands, I worked with porcelain for the first time and developed a series of cast shapes based on crockery and spoons, and on the space between the table and the objects." MvK
